Traditionally, a tie dye shirt was colored by using just dye. Later modern textile technologies developed equipment, processes, fabrics and colorings to make the colored clothes straight from the textile mills. Such clothing is produced in very large quantities. If you wish to wear unique clothing that others do not own, you will have to place a special order to have them made. Such designer shirts and other dresses are really expensive.
The Tie dye process produces clothes of different colors, shades and designs. It is a simple process that anyone can do! Tie dying is carried out by folding the cloth or fabric into patterns and then tying them with rubber bands or elastic strings that can hold the patterns. Dye is either applied partly to the cloth or the cloth itself is partly soaked in the dye. Multiple colors are used so that patterns are maintained. It is recommended that the cloth or the shirt to be dyed is made wet before folding. The dying is more often done on shirts and other dresses after making them.

Colors make the difference. There are just 5 different basic color inks that are mixed in different combinations and proportions to get altogether different and attractive colors. The patterns made by the folding create designs, beyond any ones imagination. You can create different patterns by folding clothes in many ways and applying multiple colors in various parts separated by binding. The entire process is simple and doable.
First thing to do is to decide on the fabric, you will need fiber fabric like cotton or silk for applying the dye. At least 50% cotton with nylon or polyester is a good combination. Once the fabric is chosen, they must be washed; else the dye will not be effective on the cloth. If the dying is for shirts already made, you must have them washed. Add Soda ash, the Sodium carbonate, which will help the dye to set in the cloth. Remember to use the gloves and face mask for safety. You may choose the color and have them mixed even a week, in advance. The dyes must be stored in refrigerator, if you are going to use beyond a week. Mix urea in water and then mix the dye and urea solution together. Now the tied clothes with rubber band or threads can be dyed. For getting patterns of different colors, the dyes of different colors will have to be used on multiple folding so as to achieve the desired designs on the cloth. After applying the die allow it to get soaked, absorbed and dried for at least 2 hours. Drying for up to 24 hours is recommended. Finally wash the clothes at least 3 times in detergent solution. This is to ensure that dyes will not get dissolved and fade later. While doing this, wash different colored clothes in different washes.
